Event

Clashes between protesters and security forces are ongoing in central Beirut late Aug. 4 amid demonstrations demanding justice for victims of the Beirut port explosion. Security forces have used tear gas and other riot-control measures in an attempt to disperse demonstrators in the vicinity of Martyrs' Square and the Parliament building. Protesters reportedly threw stones at security forces and attempted to storm the Parliament building from several sides. Demonstrators also reportedly stormed a nearby building believed to belong to the Ministry of Economy, though some reports suggest the protesters mistakenly stormed a private office building. At least 56 people have been injured so far amid the violence; casualty figures are likely to continue to rise in the coming hours.

Protesters have blocked several roads in the area with burning tires. Increased security and localized transport disruptions are likely to persist in the area until the prospect of further violence abates. Further clashes between police and protesters remain likely.

Context

The violent demonstrations coincide with the first anniversary of the blast that killed at least 200 people and wounded some 6,000 others in Beirut in August 2020. Protest leaders allege that politicians are obstructing the investigation into the explosion and have called for lawmakers' protection from prosecution to be revoked.

Avoid all protest activity due to the potential for further violence. Heed the advice of security personnel and leave the area immediately at the first sign of any confrontation. Allow additional time to reach destinations throughout central Beirut through at least early Aug. 5.
