Strong winds down trees, prompt power outages in and around Auckland, New Zealand, early Aug. 3. Further disruptions possible.

Warning

Event

Strong winds and associated power and transport disruptions will likely continue in parts of northern New Zealand through at least the afternoon of Aug. 3. As of early Aug. 3, the New Zealand National Meteorological Service (MetService) has issued a strong wind watch for greater Auckland, Northland, and the Coromandel Peninsula. Authorities may issue new alerts or update/rescind existing advisories as weather conditions change over the coming hours, and possibly days.

Auckland residents and utility companies have reported downed trees, localized power outages, and minor structural damage in some neighborhoods. Additional power outages could occur throughout the affected area.

Strong winds may prompt officials to cancel some commuter ferry services or close sections of bridges. Downed trees could block roadways in multiple areas. The disruptive weather may also cause some delays and cancellations at regional airports.

Advice

Monitor local media for weather updates and related advisories. Confirm all transport reservations and business appointments before travel. Make allowances for localized travel delays and potential supply chain disruptions where severe weather has occurred. Charge battery-powered devices in the case of prolonged electricity outages.
