Nigeria: Authorities impose security-related curfew in parts of Plateau State, Aug. 15 /update 1

Officials impose security curfew in Jos North, Jos South, and Bassa LGAs, Plateau State, Nigeria, effective Aug. 15, following attack.

Warning

Event

Authorities in Plateau State imposed a 24-hour curfew in the Local Government Areas (LGAs) of Jos North, Jos South, and Bassa from 14:00 Aug 15. The move follows communal violence that left at least 23 people dead in the area on Aug. 14. It remains unclear whether the curfew will be extended. Due to the recent violence, educational entities, including the University of Jos have also suspended classes until further notice.

Authorities will maintain an increased security presence across Jos North, Jos South, and Bassa areas over the coming days. Localized transport and business disruptions are likely to persist.

Context

The Aug. 14 attack occurred on Rukuba Road, which runs to the west of Jos, the administrative capital of Plateau State. Attackers were reportedly part of a Christian militia and stopped a convoy of buses carrying Muslim travelers, attacking and killing them. The motive for the attack is unclear; however, disputes over land rights issues may have prompted the communal clashes on Aug. 14. Nigerian authorities have long struggled to contain worsening interethnic violence related to land rights across the country, including in Plateau State. While locals are more likely to be affected, the incidental threat to foreign nationals remains.

Advice

Abide by the curfew. Carry official identification at all times. Heed all instructions from security personnel. Remain calm and nonconfrontational, and comply with authorities' directions. Avoid travel at night. Maintain contact with your diplomatic representation.
