Peru: Pro-government activists to demonstrate in Lima, Aug. 25-26

Activists plan to protest in Lima, Peru, Aug. 25-26, in support of the national government. Disruptions likely.

Warning

Event

Supporters of the ruling-party Free Peru (Peru Libre) plan to demonstrate in Lima Aug. 25-26, in support of members of the national government's cabinet. Activists intend to gather late Aug. 25 at Plaza San Martin and continue rallying Aug. 26 near Peru's Congress, where legislators will vote to support or reject members of President Pedro Castillo's cabinet. Castillo was inaugurated as President of Peru on July 28.

Thousands are likely to participate in the demonstrations, which are likely to occur throughout Lima's downtown area. Protests are possible in other cities in the country. Clashes with police are possible, as are counter-protests organized by critics of the Castillo administration.

Context

The protests are being organized by the leader of Free Peru, Vladimir Cerron, to demand members of Congress to ratify President Castillo's cabinet members. Cerron has said Congress may try to impose a government different from the one elected by Peruvian voters.

The controversy is mostly around the President of the Council of Ministers (Prime Minister) Guido Bellido, a designation that members of the opposition have strongly criticized. Bellido is currently under investigation for glorifying terrorism.

Advice

Avoid all protests. Allow additional time to reach your destination if operating in Lima late Aug. 25 and Aug. 26. Heed instructions from authorities.
