South Sudan: Clashes kill at least 27 people in Tonj East County, Warrap State Aug. 15-16

Fighting between rival communities has left at least 27 people dead and over 29 others wounded in the village of Romathieng, Tonj East County, Warrap State, Aug. 15-16. According to local officials, the fighting erupted when armed youth from Lou Paher and Thiik communities raided over 100 head of cattle from the Luany-Jang community. Tonj is located approximately 410 km (255 mi) northwest of Juba.

A heightened security presence is likely in the area over the coming days. Further clashes between rival communities are also possible over the coming days and weeks. Incidents are unlikely to target foreign personnel; however, the risk from incidental violence remains high.
