Activists to protest COVID-19 measures in multiple urban centers in Spain Aug. 14; heightened security, localized disruptions likely.

Warning

Event

Activists plan to demonstrate in multiple urban centers Aug. 14. The action is to denounce measures imposed to combat the spread of COVID-19, particularly the planned vaccination of children aged 12-17 before the school term begins in September.

The largest actions are likely in Barcelona, where participants will gather at 20:00 at the Arco de Triunfo, and in Madrid, where activists will march from the Ministry of Health from 20:00 to Puerta de Sol.

  • Alicante: Plaza de La Montaneta, 19:30

  • Almeria: Paseo Maritimo de Almeria, Playa San Miguel, 20:00

  • Asturias: Plaza del Marques, 19:30

  • Bilbao: Arriaga Theater, 20:00

  • Cordoba: Plaza de las Tendillas, 20:00

  • Granada: Plaza del Carmen, 20:00

  • Las Palmas: Plaza de la Musica, 19:00

  • Malaga: Plaza de la Marina, 20:00

  • Mallorca: Paseo Maritimo de Palma Park, 20:00

  • Murcia: Plaza Cardenal Belluga, 20:00

  • Pamplona: Plaza del Castillo, 20:00

  • Santiago de Compostela: March departing from the Alameda, along Calle del Franco to Plaza del Obradoiro, 18:30

  • Sevilla: Plaza de San Francisco, 20:00

  • Tenerife: Plaza de Espana, 17:00

  • Valencia: March departing from Plaza del Ayuntamiento to Plaza de la Virgen, 20:00

  • Zaragoza: Plaza de Espana, 20:00

Additional protests are possible elsewhere. Police will deploy to monitor all demonstrations. Large numbers of people and associated security measures will likely prompt localized transport disruptions; public transport services may be canceled or diverted. While widespread violence is not likely, it cannot be ruled out entirely, especially if protesters become unruly or refuse police orders to disperse

Advice

Avoid all demonstrations as a routine security precaution and mitigate associated disruptions. Heed instructions from security services and leave the area at the first sign of a confrontation. Monitor local media sources for up-to-date information on planned demonstrations throughout Aug. 14. Check for transport disruptions and allow extra time for travel in affected locations.
