Ecuador: Anti-government protest march planned in Quito Sept. 15

Activists affiliated with multiple organizations, including the Workers' Unitary Front (Frente Unitario de Trabajadores, FUT) and the Confederation of Indigenous Nationalities of Ecuador (Confederacion de Nacionalidades Indigenas del Ecuador, CONAIE), plan to stage a protest march in Quito Sept. 15 to denounce the national government's economic policies. Demonstrators demand that the government freeze fuel prices, halt the privatization of public companies, and include unions in negotiations regarding proposed labor reforms, among other issues. Activists plan to gather outside the Social Security Fund (Caja del Seguro Social) offices near Parque El Ejido starting at 16:00 and march to the Carondelet Palace via downtown Quito.

Thousands of people are likely to participate in the protest. Heightened security and disruptions to transport and business are likely in downtown Quito. Clashes are unlikely but cannot be ruled out.
