Explosions reported near Erbil International Airport in Iraq early Sept. 12 Increased security likely over coming hours.

Multiple explosions have been reported near Erbil International Airport (EBL) early Sept. 12. According to local security forces, the blasts caused by air defense systems launched to intercept weaponized drones there were attacking the facility. The incident reportedly triggered warning sirens at the nearby US Consulate. There have been no immediate reports of casualties or damage. No group has as yet claimed responsibility for the attack.
Authorities will almost certainly maintain a heightened security posture near and at EBL through Sept. 12 while they investigate and respond to the incident. Lingering disruptions to airport operations are possible. Additional attacks targeting EBL or nearby areas cannot be ruled out.
