Nepal: Activists plan protest in Kathmandu Sept. 8
Communist Party of Nepal announces protest march in Kathmandu, Nepal, 12:00 Sept. 8. Increased security, transport disruptions likely.
Event
The Communist Party of Nepal (CPN) has announced a protest march from New Baneshwor to Maitighar Mandala in Kathmandu 12:00 Sept. 8. Participants will subsequently protest at Maitighar Mandala. Organizers have not announced a specific march route, though protesters will likely march along Madan Bhandari Road. Participants intend to denounce the government’s process to approve the US Millennium Challenge Corporation (MCC) aid program; some parties, including the CPN, claim the MCC only serves US interests. Participation in the march may be between hundreds and a few thousand people. The CPN plans to hold additional protests in the coming days.
Security personnel will likely monitor the protest and may try to disperse the march if it is especially disruptive. Clashes between protesters and police are possible. Localized transport disruptions are likely along and near the march route, especially if police close roads in the area.
Advice
Avoid the protest due to possible clashes. If violence breaks out, leave the area immediately. Follow all security personnel instructions. Allow additional travel time near the march route.
