Nepal: CPN-M calls for nationwide protests Sept. 10

CPN-M calls for nationwide protests in Nepal Sept. 10. Localized transport disruptions likely near rallies. Clashes possible.

Informational

Event

The Communist Party of Nepal-Maoist (CPN-M) has called for nationwide protests on Sept. 10. The purpose of the rallies is to denounce the government’s process to approve the US Millennium Challenge Corporation (MCC) aid program; some parties, including the CPN-M, claim the MCC only serves US interests.

CPN-M supporters plan to rally from 16:30 at Manav Adhikar Chowk in Pokhara. Protest starting times and venues in other locations were not immediately publicized, though rallies are most likely near government buildings and at major squares and intersections.

Security forces will almost certainly deploy to rally locations as a precaution. Clashes between police and activists could occur and authorities may try to break up more disruptive gatherings. Localized transport disruptions are likely near well-attended demonstrations. Business disruptions are also possible, especially if violence occurs.

Advice

Exercise caution around government buildings and other likely rally locations. Avoid rallies due to possible clashes. If violence breaks out nearby, take shelter in a secure, non-governmental building. Follow all instructions from security personnel. Monitor trusted local news sources, as organizers may not announce protests in advance. Allow additional travel time near demonstrations. Confirm business appointments and transport reservations in advance.
