Adverse weather forecast across parts of southern and central New Zealand through at least late Sept. 10. Disruptions likely.
Event
Strong winds are forecast to continue in parts of southern and central New Zealand through at least late Sept. 10. The affected areas include most of South Island and far southern areas of North Island, including in and around Wellington. Wind gusts of up to 130 kph (81 mph) are possible in the affected regions. The New Zealand National Meteorological Service has issued the following watches and warnings:
Strong Wind Warning (second-highest level on a three-tier scale): Most of South Island from near Invercargill to Marlborough and southern North Island from greater Wellington to Wairarapa.
Strong Wind Watch: Greater Christchurch and nearby areas.
Authorities may issue new alerts or update/rescind existing advisories as weather conditions change over the coming days.
Transport
Downed trees have prompted transport disruptions in parts of South Island, including along sections of State Highway 1 and State Highway 79. Strong winds may prompt officials to cancel some ferry services or close sections of bridges. The disruptive weather may also cause some delays and cancellations at regional airports.
Utilities
Residents and utility companies have reported downed trees, localized power outages, and minor structural damage in parts of Christchurch. Additional power outages could occur throughout the affected area.
Advice
Monitor local media for weather updates and related advisories. Confirm all transport reservations and business appointments before travel. Make allowances for localized travel delays and potential supply chain disruptions where severe weather has occurred. Charge battery-powered devices in case of prolonged electricity outages.
