New Zealand: Ferry service disruptions likely in the Cook Strait until early October
Ferry service disruptions likely in the Cook Strait until early October. Interisland supply chain disruptions possible in New Zealand.
Event
State-owned KiwiRail ferry services are likely to face disruptions through at least early October, with two of the company's three ferries out of service for maintenance work. At least one ferry will return to service Oct. 2, but repair delays are possible. Bluebridge ferries will continue to operate normally.
KiwiRail increased ferry shipments in recent weeks to help ease shipping delays in the coming weeks. The company also has a load-sharing agreement with Bluebridge that takes effect during periods of reduced capacity. However, supply chain disruptions remain possible between North and South islands. Increased cargo congestion may occur at terminals in Picton and Wellington; localized traffic disruptions cannot be ruled out. Authorities are prioritizing freight shipments and will likely reschedule some passenger travel on KiwiRail ferries. Increased cargo and passenger demand is likely for Bluebridge services.
Advice
Confirm ferry reservations. Do not travel to or route shipments through affected terminals without verifying onward transport. Allow additional time for interisland shipments; use alternative shipping methods for time-sensitive freight.
