Nigeria: Fuel tanker drivers to strike nationwide from Oct. 8

Fuel tanker drivers to strike nationwide in Nigeria from Oct. 8. Work-to-rule action from Sept. 27.

Informational

Event

Representatives of the Petroleum Tanker Drivers (PDT) have called for an indefinite nationwide strike from Oct. 8 over the poor state of roads and other safety concerns. Organizers also called on drivers to embark on a work-to-rule action from Sept. 27. Tanker drivers blocked exit roads in Bida, Niger State, on Sept. 24 over the same issues.

The strike may cause fuel shortages nationwide, particularly if the action is prolonged. Striking drivers could demonstrate, mainly outside fuel depots and oil marketing company offices. Striking drivers could also block major road routes. Security forces may deploy to monitor large gatherings; violence cannot be ruled out if police forcibly disperse crowds.

Advice

Plan for possible fuel shortages. Avoid all demonstrations as a precaution due to possible clashes. Immediately depart an area or seek shelter inside a secure, nongovernmental location if a rowdy crowd begins forming nearby. Heed all advice of security personnel. Reconfirm the status of road routes before travel, from Oct. 8.
