Russia: Officials report increased activity at Karymsky Volcano as of Sept. 15
Increased volcanic activity at Karymsky Volcano near Petropavlovsk, Kamchatka Krai, Russia, Sept. 15; transport disruptions possible.
Event
Authorities are observing heightened activity at the Karymsky Volcano, approximately 65 km (40 miles) northeast of Petropavlovsk, Kamchatka Krai, as of late Sept. 15. Officials from the Russian Ministry of Emergency Situations (EMERCOM) have reported that an ash column of up to 3,300 m (10,827 feet) was ejected from the volcano late Sept. 15 and spread southeastward towards Kronotsky Zaliv at least 40 km (25 miles). The volcano could produce additional ash and gas emissions, tremors, and explosions in the coming weeks. Any large-scale eruption at Karymsky could prompt transport disruptions in the surrounding area. Ashfall may reduce visibility and cause hazardous driving conditions. Flight disruptions are possible at Elizovo Airport (PKC) in Petropavlovsk, if a significant eruption occurs and winds direct ash clouds in the general direction of the airports.
Officials have warned of possible ash falls, advising residents to close all doors and windows and only go out if necessary. If ash has entered the building, masks or cotton bandages soaked in a soda solution should be worn. Do not use computers, radios, and other electronic equipment and cover them with plastic wraps or thick cloths. Remove ash from the roof, gutters, and other areas. Wear a mask and goggles when cleaning. Do not bring clothes contaminated with ash into the house.
Advice
Plan for possible transportation disruptions if operating near Popocatepetl. Avoid areas within the exclusion zone around the volcano. In the event of a large eruption, use face masks and observe other precautions to avoid ash inhalation. Monitor local media for updates and confirm flights from PKC if volcanic activity intensifies.
