Self-employed workers plan vehicular protests in several South Korean cities 23:00 Sept. 8-01:00 Sept. 9. Localized disruptions possible.

Informational

Event

Self-employed workers plan to hold vehicular rallies in multiple cities in South Korea 23:00 Sept. 8-01:00 Sept. 9 to oppose the government's COVID-19 restrictions. Organizers say they will gather in Seoul and Ulsan, and Gangwon, North Jeolla, and South Gyeongsang provinces; additional demonstrations may occur in other cities nationwide. Gatherings will likely take place at prominent roadways and nearby government buildings. Hundreds of people will probably participate in each protest.

Authorities will probably increase security, including deploying additional personnel, at any gathering sites. Localized transport and business disruptions may occur near any protest. While the demonstrations will likely be peaceful, clashes between protesters and security personnel remain possible. Officials may disperse any action that they deem to violate COVID-19 protocols; the police in Seoul said that any vehicular protest involving more than one person would breach COVID-19 measures.

Advice

Avoid any protests as a precaution. Plan for possible localized transport disruptions near any protest sites late Sept. 8-early Sept. 9. If violence erupts nearby, immediately depart the area and seek shelter at a safe non-government building. Heed all official transport and security advisories.
