Emergency crews are working to contain a wildfire in the mountains of Sierra Bermeja in Jubrique Municipality, Malaga Province. As of Sept. 13, the fire was approximately 7,700 hectares (19,027 acres) in size. Around 910 personnel are on-site battling the blaze. Authorities have not provided an estimated containment date for the fire. Officials evacuated at least 2,600 people from Estepona and Benahavis as well as from mountain villages in Jubrique, Genalguacil, Juzcar, Alpandeire, Farajan, and Pujerra Sept. 12. As of Sept. 13, some residents have returned but around 1,700 people remain displaced. The blaze has reportedly killed one firefighter and injured two other firefighters.
The fire has prompted the closure of Highway AP-7 to Cadiz between Kilometers 157 and 171, as well as provincial roads MA-8301 and MA-8302 in the area.
Emergency responders may implement further road closures at short notice depending on evolving wildfire conditions and operational needs. Smoke from the fire could cause poor air quality in the affected area. Authorities may introduce mandatory evacuation orders at short notice. The fire could also lead to power supply disruptions.
