Event
Unidentified gunmen kidnapped an unknown number of mining company personnel near Alkoma, Seno Province, Sahel Region, Oct. 29. The abductees worked at the Essakane mining site, a joint venture between Canadian-based IAMGOLD and the government. Initial sources have suggested three people were kidnapped, and six injured during the attack; several others escaped. The assailants also burned equipment, including vehicles, during the attack. No group immediately claimed responsibility for the assault. Local authorities have not yet confirmed the incident.
Context
The raid underscores the severe insecurity and risk of militant attacks across much of Burkina Faso. Islamist militants operating in the tri-border area (i.e., near the shared borders of Niger, Mali, and Burkina Faso) continue to perpetrate similar attacks and are usually the primary suspects. Armed bandits have also contributed to the deteriorating security environment.
