Unidentified gunmen killed at least five police officers in Di, Sourou Province, in Boucle du Mouhoun Region, the morning of Oct. 31. The assailants also stole several vehicles during the attack. No group immediately claimed responsibility for the assault. Local authorities confirmed the attack.
Context
The raid underscores the severe insecurity and risk of militant attacks across much of Burkina Faso. Islamist militants operating in the tri-border area (i.e., near the shared borders of Niger, Mali, and Burkina Faso) and surrounding regions continue to perpetrate similar attacks and are usually the primary suspects. Armed bandits have also contributed to the deteriorating security environment.
