Event

The Coalition of Patriots for Change (CPC) militia group reportedly ambushed a civilian convoy on the National Road 2 (RN2) leading to Alindao, Oct. 5. The vehicles were ambushed near the village of Matchika, Ouaka Prefecture. Up to 30 people were killed in the attack and several others injured. Matchika is located 20 km ( mi) southeast of Bambari.

On Oct. 1, authorities in Bambari extended the nightly curfew from 22:00-05:00 to 18:00-05:00 due to rising insecurity.

Context

Despite the signing of the February 2019 peace agreement between 14 armed groups, rebels continue to pose a threat throughout the country. The CPC rebel alliance was created ahead of the December 2020 presidential elections with the aim of destabilizing the government. Numerous CPC attacks have been held in the western part of the country since then. Further violence attributed to the group is likely.

Advice

Avoid travel at night and undertake all travel in convoy outside of urban centers. Liaise with trusted sources on the status of routes before departure. Maintain regular contact with diplomatic representations.
