Ecuador: Activists call for nationwide protests to continue Oct. 27
Indigenous activist groups in Ecuador call for second day of nationwide protests, Oct. 27; clashes possible.
Event
Activist groups, including the Confederation of Indigenous Nationalities of Ecuador (Confederacion de Nacionalidades Indigenas del Ecuador, CONAIE), have called for a second day of anti-government protests, Oct. 27. Protesters gathered in several urban centers Oct. 26 in opposition to rising fuel prices; they have also made several other demands.
The location and times for the protests on Oct. 27 have not been confirmed. However, likely gathering points in Quito include the Ecuadorian Institute of Social Security (IESS), located opposite El Ejido Park on Avenida 10 de Agosto. Protesters may also gather at Guayaquil's Parque Centenario.
On the first day of protests, demonstrators gathered in at least five departments of the country. Clashes were reported in Quito; 37 people were also arrested. Most demonstrations outside of the capital remained peaceful.
Police will almost certainly deploy to monitor protests and secure government buildings. Clashes between police and protesters are likely if police attempt to disperse those who block roads or breach security cordons near government buildings. Clashes between opposing groups cannot be ruled out if counterprotests take place.
Advice
Avoid all protests. If violence breaks out, leave the area immediately and seek shelter in a secure location. Heed the instructions of the authorities. Allow additional time for ground transport near affected areas.
