Ethiopia: Heightened security likely in Addis Ababa during Oct. 4 inauguration of new government

Elevated security and travel disruptions likely in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia, through Prime Minister's Oct. 4 inauguration.

Warning

Event

Heightened security and transport disruptions are likely in Addis Ababa, Oct. 4, during the inauguration of Ethiopia's new government; incumbent Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed will be sworn for his second term after winning the nation's June 21 parliamentary elections. The ceremony will occur at Meskel Square, though the exact time has as yet not been announced. Authorities will likely temporarily close certain thoroughfares leading to Meskel Square, such as Arat Kilo, Bole, Churchill, Lideta, and Megenagna roads, during the inauguration.

Security personnel will likely set up roadblocks and perform identity checks around sensitive sites and hotels in Addis Ababa. Authorities could also increase security measures near government buildings and foreign embassies. Traffic disruptions are likely in areas where heightened security measures are enforced, including on roads leading into and out of Addis Ababa. Security personnel may also close roads temporarily to prioritize official motorcade movements.

Advice

Exercise increased caution if operating in Addis Ababa on Oct. 4. Avoid inauguration-related events to minimize potential disruptions; keep away from areas where security personnel appear to be deploying. Heed all instructions from local authorities and allow additional time to reach destinations near locations where demonstrations or other gatherings may take place.
