French Guiana: Authorities close fuel stations territorywide until Oct. 20 to avoid shortages

Authorities in French Guiana close fuel stations territorywide until Oct. 20 to avoid shortages. Further protests possible.

Informational

Event

Authorities in French Guiana closed fuel stations territorywide through Oct. 19 after protesters blocked two depots in Remire-Montjoly and Kourou the previous day to denounce COVID-19 restrictions. According to officials, the closure of fuel stations was to avoid possible fuel shortages. Individuals will be limited to 10 liters of fuel per vehicle when stations reopen Oct. 20.

Temporary fuel shortages are probable over the coming days. Long queues at refilling stations and other fuel depots are likely, and fuel hoarding may exacerbate shortages in some places. Demonstrations against shortages or other government measures may occur. Likely protest locations include fuel distribution areas or government buildings. Security forces will almost certainly deploy and attempt to disperse any gatherings that materialize.

Context

The Union des Travailleurs Guyanais (UTG) and other activists blocked two Societe Anonyme de la Raffinerie des Antilles-Guyane (SARA) fuel depots Oct. 18 to protest the territory's current COVID-19 restrictions, including the health pass. Protesters also condemned the recent prison sentences for four activists.

Advice

Stock up on fuel when possible; if traveling long distances is unavoidable, ensure your tank is full and carry additional supplies. Ensure fuel supplies to generators; confirm delivery agreements. Avoid all protests as a precaution.
