Informational

Event

Activists plan to protest at Al Habobi Square in Nasiriyah, Dhi Qar Governorate, from 15:00 Oct. 3 to demand the release of prominent activist Sajjad Al-Iraqi, who remains missing since September 2020. Protesters allege that Iran-backed militias are responsible for his disappearance. Dozens of individuals could attend the demonstration.

Increased security and localized transport disruptions are likely near Al Habobi Square through late Oct. 3. Clashes between police and protesters are possible, particularly if demonstrators are overly disruptive or if they ignore police orders to disperse.

Nasiriyah is approximately 160 km (100 miles) northwest of Basra.

Advice

Avoid the protest due to the potential for violence. If clashes break out, leave the area immediately and take shelter in a secure, nongovernmental building. Follow all security personnel instructions. Allow additional time if traveling through the affected area Oct. 3.
