Italy: Port workers in Trieste and Genoa to block port operations from Oct. 15

Port workers in Trieste and Genoa, Italy, plan to block port operations from Oct. 15; disruptions are likely.

Warning

Event

Port workers in Trieste and Genoa plan to stage indefinite blocking protests at both ports from Oct. 15. The purpose of the action is to pressure the Italian government to abandon plans to make Green Passes mandatory for all workers in Italy from Oct. 15; the Green Pass confirms the holder is vaccinated against, recently recovered from, or recently tested negative for COVID-19. Concessions offered by Italian authorities have so far been rejected by port worker representatives; the government has not indicated that it is likely to reverse its decision on the Green Pass requirement. Related actions are possible at additional ports nationwide from Oct. 15.

Disruptions to port operations, including general cargo and passenger ferry services, are almost certain should the protests go ahead. Protesters may block major routes leading to port facilities prompting transport disruptions in the surrounding area. Authorities are likely to deploy additional police to monitor the protests; isolated clashes between police and protesters are possible, particularly if police attempt to forcibly disperse participants. Lingering shipping delays are likely following any protests as port authorities work to clear backlogs.

Advice

Confirm maritime shipments and port-handling operations at Trieste and Genoa ports from Oct. 15. Exercise caution near the port area; avoid all protests. Heed instructions from security services and leave the area at the first sign of a confrontation.
