Japan: Factory fire reported in Otaru city, Hokkaido Prefecture, Oct. 5

Emergency crews are responding to a factory fire in Otaru city of Hokkaido Prefecture as of the morning of Oct. 5. The blaze is reportedly causing thick smoke and explosive noises in the area. There are no immediate reports of casualties. The cause of the fire is unclear.

Authorities have increased security in the area. Localized transport disruptions may last through at least the afternoon of Oct. 5. Operations at nearby facilities may face delays or interruptions. Lingering disruptions are possible until firefighting and investigations end.

The incident site is approximately 31 km (19.3 miles) northwest of Sapporo.
