Nigeria: Armed assailants kill at least 14 civilians in Zamfara State Oct. 5

Suspected armed bandits ambushed the locality of Kurya Madaro, Kaura Local Government Area (LGA), Zamfara State late Oct. 5. Reports are conflicting, with some reports indicating the attack left 14 dead, and others 18 dead. During the attack that reportedly lasted several hours, assailants looted several buildings and stole livestock. No group has claimed responsibility yet.

The attack occurred despite tight security measures in place. Authorities had previously suspended all telecommunications in Zamfara and placed restrictions on select businesses and on the movement of vehicles.

Authorities will likely maintain a heightened security presence across the state in the near term due to ongoing operations to apprehend armed bandits. Localized transport disruptions, such as checkpoints, are likely. Officials could also expand the existing business, movement, and communication restrictions if the security situation worsens.
