Informational

Event

Suspected bandits killed 18 people in Mazakuka village, Mashegu Local Government Area (LGA), Niger State, early Oct. 25. Gunmen on motorbikes raided the village and reportedly targeted civilians at a local mosque. The assault also resulted in an unknown number of injuries.

Context

Armed banditry is one of the primary security threats in central and northern Nigeria. Bandits regularly resort to lethal methods and also carry out kidnappings. Locals are more likely to be affected by related incidents, but the threat to foreign nationals remains. State governments in the region have responded with several movement and commerce restrictions since late August, including in Niger State. Officials also continue to support local militia against the assailants. Despite these measures, insecurity is likely to persist.
