Informational

Event

Labor unions representing state and local government workers in Cross River State are calling for a state-wide indefinite strike from Oct. 12. Organizers, including the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC), Trade Union Congress (TUC), and Joint Public Negotiation Council (JPNC), are pressing the state government to meet their 14-point demands, including remittance of deductions from salaries, implementing minimum wage, and increasing teachers' allowance. It is unclear how many workers will participate in the action.

Disruptions to state and local government services are possible throughout Cross River State during the strike. As of Oct. 11, union leaders have not announced associated public demonstrations; however, protests by government workers are possible. Security forces may deploy to monitor large gatherings; violence could occur if police forcibly disperse crowds.

Advice

Anticipate disruptions to government services for the duration of the strike action. Avoid all demonstrations as a routine security precaution and leave the area at the first sign of a confrontation. Monitor local media for further updates.
