Armed group attack police in the Sahel Region, Burkina Faso, Nov. 12. At least five people killed.
Event
Unidentified gunmen attacked Burkinabe security forces near Alkoma in the Sahel Region, Nov. 12. Seven police officers were killed and five others were injured in the attack. Authorities have stated that search operations are ongoing in the area. No group immediately claimed responsibility for the attack.
Context
The attack underscores the severe insecurity and risk of militant attacks across much of Burkina Faso. Islamist militants operating in the tri-border area (i.e., near the shared borders of Niger, Mali, and Burkina Faso) continue to perpetrate similar attacks and are usually the primary suspects. Armed bandits have also contributed to the deteriorating security environment.
