Unidentified gunmen killed 19 gendarmes and a civilian in an attack against a military police post near the Inata gold mine in Soum Province, Nov. 14. Authorities are conducting search operations in the area to locate and apprehend the perpetrators. No group immediately claimed responsibility for the attack.

Context

The attack underscores the severe insecurity and risk of militant attacks across much of Burkina Faso. Islamist militants operating in the tri-border area (i.e., near the shared borders of Niger, Mali, and Burkina Faso) continue to perpetrate similar attacks and are usually the primary suspects. Armed bandits have also contributed to the deteriorating security environment.
