Further anti-government demonstrations possible in Faya-Largeau, Chad, through at least early December; protest ongoing as of Nov. 22.

Warning

Event

Further anti-government demonstrations are possible in Faya-Largeau, Borkou Region, through at least early December following daily protests Nov. 16-21 to condemn actions taken by local authorities related to vehicle confiscations. A related protest is reportedly ongoing as of Nov. 22; security forces are reportedly firing tear gas to disperse crowds gathered at Place Blanche. Residents have vowed to continue their protest movement until the local governor is dismissed.

At least one protester was killed and another injured during fighting with security forces Nov. 17.

Authorities will almost certainly maintain an increased security presence in Faya-Largeau over the coming days. Additional demonstrations and clashes are also possible. Localized disruptions are likely near any demonstrations that occur.

Context

Chad's political and security environment remains unstable following the April 20 death of longtime president, Idriss Deby Itno. While the Faya-Largeau protests are more localized in nature, the overall tense political environment is encouraging security forces to respond with heavy-handed tactics.

Advice

Consult with trusted local sources for updates regarding protests as organizers have not announced all details in advance. Avoid demonstration venues, particularly affected areas of Faya-Largeau. Keep away from any areas where security forces appear to be deploying; leave the area at the first sign of any confrontation. Allow extra time to reach destinations in central areas of major cities until any protests have concluded.
