Indefinite 16:00-06:00 curfew in place in Bawku, Upper East Region, Ghana, as of Nov. 25 due to insecurity.
Event
As of Nov. 25 an indefinite 16:00-06:00 curfew is in place in Bawku and its environs, Upper East Region. The Interior Ministry imposed the measure Nov. 24, due to insecurity. The exact nature of the threat is unclear; however, reports indicate that unknown individuals fired gunshots over a land dispute Nov. 23. Under the curfew, people present in the affected area are prohibited from carrying weapons, ammunition, or any other similar material. Local authorities also banned the wearing of smocks, claiming that criminals may use them to hide weapons.
Bawku is located 8 km (5 miles) south of the border with Burkina Faso.
An increased security presence, as well as movement and commercial disruptions, are likely as a result of the curfew. Locals opposed to the measure may stage protests; police will likely move forcefully to disperse any gatherings that may materialize.
Advice
Strictly comply with the curfew and heed other instructions from local authorities. Remain courteous and cooperative if stopped by security personnel. Avoid all demonstrations as a precaution.
