Israel: Activists plan to gather in Sheikh Jarrah, East Jerusalem, from 20:00 Nov. 2

Activists to gather from 20:00 in Sheikh Jarrah, East Jerusalem, Israel, Nov. 2. Heightened security likely, clashes possible.

Warning

Event

Activists plan to gather in East Jerusalem's Sheikh Jarrah neighborhood from 20:00 Nov. 2. The action is to support Palestinian residents in the neighborhood who rejected a decision from judicial authorities which would grant them 15 years of protected tenancy from possible eviction. The protest will probably be well-attended.

Heightened security is almost certain throughout Sheikh Jarrah and other flashpoint sites in East Jerusalem, such as the Al Aqsa Mosque/Temple Mount compound, through late Nov. 2. Previous demonstrations have degenerated into clashes between protesters and Israeli security forces. Further clashes between protesters and security forces are possible, especially if protesters are overly disruptive or fail to adhere to police instructions. Security forces may respond to demonstrations with tear gas, stun grenades, and other riot control measures. Clashes between Palestinian protesters and Israeli residents are also possible. Localized transport disruptions are likely near any protest activity.

Context

The case of Sheikh Jarrah has garnered much attention and prompted mass demonstrations throughout East Jerusalem in recent months. The legal battle over the eviction of Palestinian residents of the neighborhood was a significant factor in the 11-day conflict between Israel and Gazan-based militants in May. Activists allege that Israeli settlers are attempting to remove Palestinians from East Jerusalem.

Advice

Avoid the Sheikh Jarrah area of East Jerusalem through at least Nov. 3 due to the potential for violence. Exercise caution and allow extra time for travel throughout the affected area. Seek updated information on security conditions and possible movement restrictions before traveling. Do not attempt to bypass security checkpoints; even an accidental breach of the security cordon near a checkpoint may prompt a response from Israeli security forces.
