Pro-Palestinian activists plan to protest nationwide in Morocco Nov. 29. Increased security, localized transport disruptions likely.

Informational

Event

The Moroccan Front for Supporting Palestine and against Normalization has announced plans for nationwide protests Nov. 29 in conjunction with the International Day of Solidarity with the Palestinian People. Activists are denouncing Israeli Defense Minister Benny Gantz's recent trip to Morocco and demanding that Moroccan authorities cease normalizing ties with Israel. Thousands of individuals could attend the demonstrations.

Increased security and localized transport disruptions are likely near gathering sites, especially in major cities such as Rabat, Casablanca, and Marrakesh Nov. 29. Clashes between police and protesters cannot be ruled out, particularly if demonstrators are overly disruptive or if they ignore police orders to disperse.

Context

Morocco became the fourth Arab state in 2020 to agree to resume diplomatic relations with Israel, following the United Arab Emirates, Bahrain, and Sudan. Morocco also agreed to grant overflights of its airspace and direct commercial flights to and from Israel for all Israeli citizens. While Morocco and Israel have historically maintained unofficial diplomatic ties, Rabat's recognition of the state of Israel transpired after former US President Donald Trump recognized Morocco's claim of sovereignty over Western Sahara in December 2020. Israel and Morocco reopened diplomatic missions in each other's capitals in January 2021.

Advice

Avoid all protests due to the potential for clashes. Heed the advice of security personnel. Allow additional time to reach destinations near the affected areas Nov. 29.
