Suspected secessionist militants from Cameroon attack community in Takum LGA, Taraba State, Nigeria, Nov. 16-17. Casualties reported.
Event
Suspected Ambazonia secessionist militants from Cameroon attacked the locality of Manga, Takum Local Government Area (LGA), Taraba State, overnight Nov. 16-17. The casualty figures are unclear; however, media reports indicate that attackers killed up to 11 people, including a local leader. Accounts also suggest assailants attacked several villages in Cameroon before crossing into Taraba State. The reason for the attack is also unclear, no group has claimed responsibility yet.
Manga is reportedly located around 20 km (12 miles) from Kashimbilla Dam.
Security forces have been deployed to secure the affected area. Heightened security presence and localized transport disruptions including checkpoints are likely in the affected. Further attacks cannot be ruled out.
Context
Tensions have escalated considerably in southwestern Cameroon since October 2017, when secessionists unilaterally proclaimed the independence of the so-called state of Ambazonia – unrecognized internationally. Ambazonia geographically includes the Northwest and Southwest regions of Cameroon. Ambazonia fighters sporadically clash with Nigerian forces and share links with Biafra separatists operating in southeastern Nigeria. Likewise, Biafra separatists sporadically enter the Bakassi Peninsula and engage with Cameroonian forces.

If operating in the area over the long term, do not discuss plans or travel routes publicly, vary routes and times of travel, and ensure the use of secure transport.
