Informational

Event

Unidentified armed assailants ambushed a convoy of civilians and self-defense guards, known as the Volunteers for the Defence of the Motherland (VDP), in the You area, Loroum Province, Nord Region Dec. 23. The attack left at least 41 individuals dead. No group immediately claimed responsibility for the assault; militants affiliated with Al-Qaeda or the Islamic State are likely responsible.

Furter such as attacks remain likely in the northern border areas over the near term.

Context

The raid underscores the severe insecurity and risk of armed attacks present across much of Burkina Faso. A similar attack occurred against a military police post near Inata gold mine in Soum Province on Nov. 14 leaving at least 49 dead.

Islamist militants operating in the tri-border area (i.e., near the shared borders of Niger, Mali, and Burkina Faso) continue to perpetrate similar attacks and are usually the primary suspects. Armed bandits have also contributed to the deteriorating security environment.

Advice

Exercise a high degree of vigilance due to the threat of attacks. Heed the advice of security officials. Liaise with trusted contacts before traveling in the area. Maintain contact with your diplomatic representation.
