Guinea: Further protests possible nationwide following demonstration Dec. 11 and 13 to demand the release of former president

Further protests by supporters of former president Alpha Conde are possible nationwide after demonstrations took place in Conakry and N'Zerekore Dec. 11, and Kindia, Dec. 13. Supporters from the Forum National pour la Liberation du Président Alpha Conde (FONAL-PRAC) gathered in front of the headquarters of the Rassemblement du Peuple de Guinee (RPG) former ruling party to demand the release of the former president, who has been detained since the Sept. 5 military coup. In Conakry, security forces used tear gas to disperse the crowd.

Further public gatherings are possible nationwide. Any gathering is likely to be met by a security force deployment. Clashes are possible at all protest locations.

Context

Lieutenant Colonel Doumbouya of the Special Forces Group (Groupement des forces Speciales) staged a coup Sept. 5, ousting Conde. After being detained at an undisclosed location, Conde is now under house arrest at his wife's residence in Conakry.

Avoid demonstrations and large concentrations of police. Seek updated information on route and destination security and road conditions before conducting ground movements. Leave the area immediately if crowds form or violence occurs.
