Morocco: Authorities to temporarily tighten measures, impose curfew, Dec. 31-Jan. 1 to contain spread of COVID-19 during New Year's holiday /update 86

Morocco to implement temporary New Year's holiday curfew, other restrictions, Dec. 31-Jan.1, to combat COVID-19 and its variants.

Critical

Event

Authorities in Morocco plan to tighten restrictions temporarily during the New Year's holiday out of concern over a potential increase in COVID-19 cases. A curfew will be in force from 23:59 Dec. 31 until 06:00 Jan. 1. Additionally, all New Year celebrations at restaurants, hotels, and tourist establishments have been banned. Moreover, all restaurants and cafes will be required to close at 23:30 on Dec. 31.

Domestic Measures
Aside from the new short-term holiday mandates, Morocco's health state of emergency (SoE) remains in effect through at least Dec. 31, although the measure will very likely be extended during the next Government Council meeting on Dec. 24. The SoE grants the government authority to impose proactive measures, including curfews and travel restrictions.

Under existing directives, proof of vaccination (i.e. a vaccine pass) is required to enter most public and private spaces, including hotels, restaurants, cafes, gyms, public baths, grocery stores, and public transport. Public baths, public swimming pools, and sports facilities are limited to operating at 50 percent capacity. Public and private gatherings are limited to 50 people. Wearing a facemask is mandatory in public spaces. Persons who violate COVID-19-related domestic restrictions may be fined.

International Travel Restrictions
All direct flights to Morocco remain suspended until further notice due to concerns over the spread of COVID-19 and the virus's Omicron strain. Maritime travel with Spain and France also remains suspended.

Authorities could reimpose, extend, further ease, or otherwise amend any restrictions with little-to-no notice depending on disease activity over the coming weeks.

Advice

Follow all official instructions. Abide by national health and safety measures. Reconfirm all business appointments and travel arrangements. Consider delaying traveling if experiencing symptoms associated with COVID-19, as they may prompt increased scrutiny and delays. Liaise with trusted contacts for further updates and guidance. Ensure contingency plans account for further disruptive measures or extensions of current restrictions. Reconsider and reconfirm nonemergency health appointments.
