Further protests denouncing insecurity likely across Nigeria, and especially in northern states, following disruptive protests Dec. 10.

Informational

Event

Further protests denouncing insecurity are likely across Nigeria, and especially in the country's northern states, in the coming days following disruptive protests in multiple states Dec. 10. Demonstrators gathered in Bauchi, Kano, Zamfara, and Sokoto states Dec. 10, as well as in the capital, Abuja. Participants reportedly blocked major roads in the northern part of the country during the protest activity.

Security forces will almost certainly deploy to any additional, related demonstrations. Localized transport disruptions and clashes between demonstrators and security forces are likely, especially in areas where protesters block roads.

Context

The Dec. 10 protests notably come after unidentified assailants recently set a bus ablaze in the Sabon Birni area, Sokoto State, killing at least 23 travelers. Sabon Birni is located around 18 km (11 miles) south of the border with Niger.

Advice

Avoid all demonstrations due to the risk of clashes. Liaise with trusted contacts to ascertain likely protest sites. Allot additional driving time if operating near protest venues; do not attempt to drive through areas where protesters are blocking roads. Leave the area immediately and seek shelter in a secure location away from government buildings if violence erupts nearby. Adhere to all instructions issued by local authorities.
