Assailants attacked security personnel in Gomboro, Sourou Province, Jan. 1. The attack left 11 government fighters injured. Officials claimed to have killed 29 of the attackers. No group immediately claimed responsibility for the assault.

Context

The raid underscores the severe insecurity and risk of armed attacks present across much of Burkina Faso. Islamist militants operating in the wider region continue to perpetrate similar attacks and are usually the primary suspects.
