Event
An improvised explosive device (IED) detonated near a French military vehicle outside of the Ouahigouya Airport, Yatenga Province, Nord Region, Jan. 18. The blast injured four soldiers, including one seriously. No group immediately claimed responsibility for the attack.
A heightened security presence is likely in the area over the coming days. Further attacks are possible.
Ouahigouya is located 151 km (94 mi) southwest of Djibo.
Context
The bombing underscores the severe insecurity and risk of armed attacks present across much of Burkina Faso. Islamist militants operating in the tri-border area (i.e., near the shared borders of Niger, Mali, and Burkina Faso) continue to perpetrate similar attacks and are usually the primary suspects. Armed bandits have also contributed to the deteriorating security environment.
