Cyprus: Adverse weather forecast through at least Jan. 11

Heavy rainfall forecast across Cyprus through at least Jan. 11; disruptions possible.

Informational

Event

Heavy rainfall, strong winds, and isolated thunderstorms are forecast across Cyrpus through at least Jan. 11. Authorities have issued an Orange weather alert – the mid-level on a three-tier scale - for heavy rainfall across Cyprus effective early Jan. 10 through early Jan. 11. Between 8.5-11 cm (3-4 inches) of rain is expected in 24 hours. Officials could update and possibly extend the coverage of weather alerts over the coming days.

Hazardous Conditions

Sustained heavy rainfall could trigger additional flooding in low-lying communities near rivers, streams, and creeks. Further urban flooding is also possible in developed areas with easily overwhelmed stormwater drainage systems. Sites located downstream from large reservoirs or rivers may be subject to flash flooding after relatively short periods of intense rainfall. Landslides are possible in hilly or mountainous areas, especially where heavy rainfall has saturated the soil. Disruptions to electricity and telecommunications services may occur where significant flooding, landslides, or strong winds impact utility networks.

Transport

Reports indicate that landslides have occurred at various points on the Kalo Chorio-Gourri road, and dense fog is causing limited visibility in the Troodos area Jan. 10. Several roads in mountainous areas are only open to four-wheel-drive vehicles and those equipped with snow chains. Floodwaters and debris flows may render some bridges or roadways impassable, impacting overland travel in and around affected areas. Ponding on road surfaces could cause hazardous driving conditions on regional highways. Authorities could temporarily close some low-lying routes that become inundated by floodwaters. Severe weather could also trigger flight delays and cancellations at regional airports. Localized business disruptions may occur in low-lying areas; some businesses might not operate at full capacity because of flood damage to facilities, possible evacuations, and some employees' inability to reach work sites.

Advice

Monitor local media for updated emergency and weather information. Seek updated information on weather and road conditions before driving or routing shipments through areas where severe weather is forecast. Confirm flights. Plan accordingly for potential delivery delays if routing shipments by truck through the affected area. Do not attempt to drive through flooded areas. Charge battery-powered devices in the case of prolonged electricity outages.
