Heightened security is likely in Nasiriyah, Dhi Qar Governorate, after security forces attempted to forcibly disperse protesters Jan. 24. Demonstrators reportedly gathered to denounce perceived police abuses, with some blocking thoroughfares with burning tires. Nasiriyah is approximately 160 km (100 miles) northwest of Basra.

Localized ground transport disruptions are likely near the protest area over the coming hours. Further related protests are possible in the city over the coming days, as well as accompanying clashes between demonstrators and security forces.
