Anti-government protests are reportedly occurring in several locations throughout Baghdad, including Nisour Square and in proximity to Baghdad Gate as of the afternoon of Jan. 20. Protesters are denouncing current presidential candidates and are demanding a public trial of Nouri al-Maliki, the former prime minister and vice-president of Iraq.
Increased security and localized transport disruptions are likely near any demonstration through the afternoon of Jan. 20. Clashes between police and protesters cannot be ruled out, particularly if demonstrators are overly disruptive or if they ignore police orders to disperse. Localized transport disruptions are likely in areas affected by protests.
