Event

Heightened security measures are likely at Ain al-Assad Airbase in Iraq's Al-Anbar Governorate over the coming hours after several rounds of rockets were fired toward the base late Jan. 5. No rocket impacts or casualties were reported at the base. While no group immediately claimed responsibility for the attack, the assault was most likely carried out by Iran-aligned militia fighters.

Context

This attack is the second to target Ain al-Assad Airbase within 48 hours. The previous assault consisted of weaponized drones which were shot down by Iraqi air defenses as they approached the base Jan. 4.

The attacks also notably follow the Jan. 3 anniversary of the deaths of Iranian general Qasem Soleimani and prominent Shi'a militia leader Abu Mahdi al-Muhandis in 2020.

Advice

Heed the instructions of local security forces. If an attack alert is issued in the general vicinity, stay indoors, away from windows and exterior walls. If possible, move to a ground floor or basement. Maintain contact with your country's diplomatic mission.
