New Caledonia: Activists plan to protest in Noumea from 08:30 Jan. 15 against COVID-19 controls
Protest against COVID-19 COVID-19 measures planned in Noumea, New Caledonia, from 08:30 Jan. 15. Increased security, clashes possible.
Event
Activists opposed to the government's COVID-19 controls plan to march in Noumea Jan. 15. Protesters will gather at the Moselle car park from 08:30 and march to the High Commission office. Authorities have banned the demonstration, but organizers have vowed to continue the march. More than 1,000 people participated in a similar protest in the territory capital, Jan. 8, and the Jan. 15 could draw the same or higher turnout.
Increased security is likely in Noumea for the demonstration; security personnel could use tear gas to disperse protesters, especially if crowds become unruly. Skirmishes between protesters and police are possible. Localized transport disruptions are likely along and near roadways on the march route.
Advice
Avoid the protest march due to possible violence. If skirmishes break out, leave the area immediately and seek shelter in a secure, nongovernmental building. Follow all security personnel instructions. Allow additional time to reach destinations in central Noumea Jan. 15.
