There have been no reports of damage or casualties following a magnitude-5.7 earthquake in the Taranaki Region, North Island, at 23:49 Jan. 12. The epicenter was about 20 km (12 miles) northeast of Eltham. The tremor occurred at a depth of about 191 km (119 miles). Light aftershocks are likely over the coming days. Officials may temporarily shut down transportation infrastructure in the tremor zone to check for damage.
