New Zealand: Officials warn of tsunami activity along east and north coasts of North Island through early Jan. 16
Officials warn of tsunami activity along east and north coasts of North Island and Chatham Islands, New Zealand, through early Jan. 16
Event
New Zealand's National Emergency Management Agency has issued a National Advisory, Jan. 15, warning of tsunami activity, particularly strong and unusual currents and surges at the shore. The advisory is applicable for the north and east coasts of the North Island and the Chatham Islands. The warning is in response to a volcanic eruption at Hunga-Tonga-Hunga-Ha'pai in Tonga. Officials are advising that people in or near the sea should move out of the water, off beaches, and away from rivers, harbors, rivers, and estuaries until 04:00 Jan. 16. The full advisory is available by clicking here. Officials may amend the advisory in the coming hours or days.
Advice
Move away from the immediate coastline; tsunamis can be long-duration events, and the threat may persist for hours. Heed the directives of the local authorities.
