Nigeria: Armed assailants kill up to 200 civilians in attacks in Zamfara State Jan. 5-6

Event

Suspected armed bandits attacked several localities in Anka and Bukuyyum local government areas (LGAs) of Zamfara State, Jan. 5-6. The affected localities include Kurfa Danya, Kurfa Magaji Rafin Gero, Tungar Isa, and Barayar Zaki. Reports indicate the attacks left up to 200 people dead. During the attacks that lasted several hours, assailants set fire to several houses and shops and stole thousands of livestock. No group has claimed responsibility yet.

Authorities will likely maintain a heightened security presence across the state in the near term to apprehend armed bandits. Localized transport disruptions, such as checkpoints, are likely. Officials could also expand the existing business, movement, and communication restrictions if the security situation worsens. Given the pervasive insecurity, further such attacks are likely in the near term.

Context

The threat for attacks and kidnappings is elevated in the northwest where officials have implemented various security measures in recent months (such as increased operations, curfews, and business restrictions), including in Sokoto, Katsina, Kaduna, and Zamfara states, in an attempt to curtail banditry and other criminal activity. Authorities may enact or lift existing security measures with no or little warning.
