Sweden: Authorities implementing tightened COVID-19 international entry testing requirements as of Jan. 7 /update 32

Event

As of Jan. 7, the government of Sweden is imposing somewhat tighter COVID-19-related controls on international entry. Under the new directives, all permitted arrivals over the age of 12 must present a negative result from a PCR/NAAT test taken no more than 48 hours prior to arrival regardless of their immunization status; the new requirement does not apply to Swedish citizens or legal residents. The new regulation supersedes an earlier procedure under which such travelers could gain entry by producing either an EU COVID Certificate as proof of vaccination or a negative result from a PCR test taken within the previous 72 hours.

Domestic Measures
Sweden's pandemic-related domestic measures remain largely unchanged since early December. A COVID-19 pass indicating proof of vaccination is generally necessary in order to access certain indoor events and public gatherings of more than 100 participants unless the venue has other preventative measures in place. Unvaccinated individuals are advised to limit social contact, and any individual with symptoms of COVID-19 is still obliged to get tested and avoid social contact while awaiting the result.

Authorities advise individuals to use face masks in crowded public spaces, including on public transport, and to practice social distancing. Employers are advised to ensure employees can work from home where possible

International Travel Restrictions
A general prohibition on non-essential travel from outside the EU/EEA will remain in effect until at least Jan. 31, although there are a number of exemptions in place. For detailed information on entry requirements and exemptions to the entry ban, click here.

Authorities could reimpose, extend, further ease, or otherwise amend any restrictions with little-to-no notice depending on disease activity over the coming weeks.

Consider delaying traveling if experiencing symptoms associated with COVID-19, as they may prompt increased scrutiny and delays. Liaise with trusted contacts for further updates and guidance. Maintain contact with your diplomatic representation. Ensure contingency plans account for further disruptive measures or extensions of current restrictions. Reconsider and reconfirm nonemergency health appointments.
